Description

The Connevans FSM2 Audio Frequency Induction Loop field strength meter is a digital meter and audio monitor for testing Audio Frequency Induction Loop Systems (AFILS). This meter is a calibrated precision measurement device, designed for both professional and non-professional users and provides a quick and accurate method of monitoring and setting the performance of loop systems.

The FSM2 is the latest generation Field Strength Meter from Connevans. It allows background magnetic noise levels to be measured as well as AFILS signal strength and the measured audio signal may be monitored using headphones. The FSM2 is perfect for checking whether a room is suitable for the installation of a loop system, checking a previously installed loop system and for setting up a new loop system. We recommend the regular testing of all public induction loops and a field strength meter should be purchased with all new induction loop installations.

A suite of free audio test signals is available for free download from https://www.connevans.co.uk/FSM2-loop-test-signals.zip

These may be used on any convenient device such as tablets, mobile phones, music players and laptops.

The FSM2 covers a wide dynamic range of magnetic field strength from -44 to 8dB re 400mA/m in two ranges along with A weighted and flat frequency responses, true RMS and PPM (Peak Programme Meter) display time responses. RMS mode is specified in EN IEC 60118-4, however PPM mode is widely considered to be advantageous for moving signals such as speech and music etc. and is recommended over RMS mode in EN IEC 60118-4, EN 62489-1, IEC TR 63079, all previous publications of BS7594 and is used for broadcast monitoring. The FMS2 offers both.

The audio monitor output matches the display EQ setting, either Flat or A weighted. Low range offers A weighting only, for measuring noise.

The FSM2 is calibrated at manufacture to meet EN IEC 60118-4. Connevans offer a calibration service and to maintain accuracy, it should be re-calibrated annually. A four point calibration at 0dB, 8dB, -18dB and -26dB is standard at time of manufacture but a full multi-point calibration option is available.

Key Features:

  • Uniquely features both RMS and PPM display modes as well as optional peak hold (as recommended in IEC standards)
  • A simple, clear and bright colour coded LED scale makes it easy to use and see from a distance. Green shows the loop signal is at an acceptable level.
  • Practical and attractive design with wipe-clean touch screen buttons
  • Silicone rubber case included for protection and durability - also allows the meter to rest in any of 6 orientations
  • Supplied with a zipped storage pouch and headphones
  • The meter can respond to programme peaks. The PPM style of indicator allows the user to verify in real time that an AFILS can provide sufficient field strength for good speech clarity.
  • On the high range setting, when set to A weighted, the monitor output frequency response emulates that of a typical induction loop listener. This means that the person testing hears a similar signal to that heard by a loop user.
  • The meter is operated in the vertical plane so that it is easy to read when held at the hearing aid position.
  • The range in use is indicated by an LED, as is a low battery condition warning.
  • 150 hours battery life from 2 alkaline AA batteries (supplied)
  • Two measurement filter (EQ) responses are provided.
  • The meter is calibrated, traceable to National Standards.
  • Designed and manufactured in the UK
